Every new baby gets a name before it is introduced to the world, and yet some entrepreneurs continue to send me business plans with TBD (to be determined) in place of a business name on the front page. They don’t realize that the name they choose, or lack of it, sets an initial perception of the business that may override all of its value. I got a random email from Brett Hagler last Thursday asking me to help his startup New Story. I looked at his web site and quickly told him it wasn’t something we’d be into exploring as an investment. He wrote back immediately, telling me that he wasn’t looking for investment, but had created a non-profit that used crowdfunding to finance and build life-changing houses around the world.

There’s a wealth of good data there on fundraising in different categories split by geography. “Scaleups”, companies that have raised $1m-10m, are where we focus and are shown in the picture above. I recently read a very eye-opening and somewhat disturbing book called Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me): Why We Justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions, and Hurtful Acts (Amazon link). It was recommended by a friend who is a prominent executive coach as well as another mutual friend in the financial recruiting space. I highly recommend it and wish everyone would read it!
