First, I think you can’t abandon mobile. It is the future like it or not. And second, I think it is critical to design for mobile first and then build a web companion. If you design for the web and then port to mobile, you will find that it is really hard to fit your UI onto the small screen. Better to design for mobile first and then build a web companion. Mobile first, web second. But as Vibhu points out, the web can’t and should not be ignored.
“Rethinking Mobile First” by Fred Wilson
What I like about Fred most is that he does not shy from his opinions, but is willing to reconsider given reasonable counterpoints. Definitely a characteristic of “strong opinions, weakly held” that this blog strives to emulate.
As I said back in April though, the platform decision comes down to context and user experience, particularly for B2B oriented solutions. Most are simply not ready for mobile first given the limitations of working on smaller interfaces and the lack of strong end-to-end mobile security infrastructures. So I would disagree with Fred and state instead that one design to user and context first and consider what users would achieve from the application across different platforms.
Where Fred is correct in stating however is that mobile is the future. That includes enterprise tech. It might not be now, but the change it coming.
