Fascinating article by Andrew McAfee - Technology Beats a Full House - discusses how variation in performance spread decreases over time as systems become optimized. He shows that the spreads in IT heavy industries has greater variation over the past decade. winners were increasingly separated from losers.

Over the past year, I’ve kept my eye on ComScore’s monthly press releases of the Video Metrix service which outlines the market share of online videos. It’s been amazing to see Google (98% of its video traffic comprised of YouTube) steadily increase its market share for six months straight (see chart below where I aggregated the info from a few months of ComScore press releases).

As I have written in previous posts, what you do with data will be one of the next battlegrounds on the web. Knowing that they had some limitations with SQL Server, Microsoft announced its acquisition of DATAllegro (full disclosure: my fund is an investor in competitor Greenplum ) to enter the data warehousing market. Enterprise volumes across the board are ramping up quickly and this clearly gives Microsoft an opportunity to capture that market.

A comment on my earlier post 75% of Facebook users are giggly and poke; 25% are serious and import bookmarks asks if there are, indeed, any serious Facebook apps. Keith Benjamin, who has been one of my business partners for more than six years and a friend since we first worked together on an IPO in 1993, died on July 29th. He was a kind and loving person who adored his family, loved his work and was passionate about everything he did. We will miss him very much. I grieve for Keith’s family and mourn his passing.

Boone Pickens made his fortune on oil and has been a bull on natural gas since before I invested in the Mesa takeover attempt of Texaco in 1988. If you are using a modern web analytics tool (tag based or log based) it is quite likely that it is using cookies for tracking purposes. In my conversations it is embarrassingly common to find a lot of FUD and confusion and lack of understanding (or appreciation of!) cookies and the role that they play in any analytics done on the web. Hence my attempt at this simple easy to understand primer.

Yesterday was my birthday and I would just like to thank Facebook for reminding all of my friends who IM’d, wrote on my wall , emailed , sent someecards , snail mailed , sent hallmark ecards , tweeted , and sms’d me a happy birthday note. This is of course a little tongue in cheek – but the reality is that web services enable people a frictionless way to wish someone a happy birthday now more than ever.

If chipsets are your thing, then feast your eyes on the latest iPhone teardown: It’s interesting that Apple have chosen to go with so many components – making the iPhone larger than it could have been if they had used integrated, monolithic die. It’s interesting to see Infineon seem to be taking over the board though… “…Infineon won big.

I have written about Momofuku Ko before and how their unique reservation system and scarce offering has been a huge help to them and demand to go to this restaurant. I just checked out Zoomii.com which is an online bookstore that lets your browse bookshelves filled with books from Amazon.com by section as if you were in a bookstore. I have found that the main benefit to this method is that you can easily see books similar to the one you are browsing for and others nearby. Amazon has this feature in its “recommended” section, but somehow browsing in a natural bookshelf manner seems more appropriate.

Ask.com will now have outsourced maps using the Microsoft Virtual Earth Maps. I see this as an interested move for Ask because of how widespread mapping has become as a play for Google, Microsoft, and even Yahoo. Map integration has led to some interesting and innovative business development deals for each company. We will see what happens with Ask.com throughout the rest of 2008.

TinyURL is a service that allows you to change a website that contains a long string of characters down into a bite sized link that can be shared via email or Twitter without worrying about character count, or the link being broken by poor formatting in an email client. I read news recently from Louis Gray that TinyURL now has custom aliases for making your shortened domain names.

Media and Our Conflicting Values: Day 3. On our last day of this Socrates Seminar , we jumped squarely into the discussion of the Internet that we all wanted to have since Day 1. First, we acknowledged the disruptive transformation of the media away from its historical one-to-many controlled distribution model, which was largely restricted to professionally produced print, radio, and linear video broadcasting content.
