Life as a self-employed professional can be stressful at times, even if you’re working at home in the comfort of your pyjamas.

It is easy for entrepreneurs to put their personal life and self-care on the backburner. Unfortunately, this behavior makes entrepreneurs more prone to stress, which can lead to decreased productivity and poor mental health.

If you’re ready to improve yourself from the inside out, here are five simple self-care tips to ensure you prioritize your well-being.

1. Create a clear morning routine

“My number one self-care tip is to carve-out at least an hour in the morning for a morning routine,” says Jess Hoffman of Choosing Chia. She suggests, “starting your day off with something for yourself, like journaling, meditation a workout, or even time to just sit and drink your coffee without any distraction is the best way to get into a positive mindset for the day”.

Hoffman also adds, “having a morning routine that gives you time for yourself also provide you with the space to take care of yourself first thing in the morning, before any distractions.”

2. Practice mindfulness on-the-go

“Practice mindfulness on the go… [and] make sure that you are focusing on being aware of what is going on in the present moment,” says Sonya Lee, the creative director of Business Empathy. Lee declares, “when you understand and bring your attention back to your body, not just your mind, you become more aware which allows you to make better decisions for the rest of your day!”

3. Embrace therapy

“This might sound strange, but the biggest self-care tip I can give someone is therapy,” Kate Holmes, travel consultant at Detailed Journeys, suggests. “There are so many ways to see a therapist or find a therapeutic release these days too.”

Holmes adds, “Whether you can find someone to see in your health insurance coverage, sign up for a therapy app (they can be pretty affordable), or even join a support group online (for free), talking things out and professing them is so important for self-care.”

4. Move daily, even when you don’t feel like it

Susanna Miles suggests, “I spent more than a year being in pain almost all day, every day. A good day meant walking two blocks without being in pain or sitting in the car for 5 minutes without wanting to cry. So I ended up going to tons of therapists.”

“After talking to various therapists I learned that movement is the best medicine. That movement prevents a lot of physical illness. And when you have chronic pain like I did moving (within reason) will help you heal. And my lack of it before is probably part of why my injury affected me so badly,” Miles adds. “As I healed from chronic pain I realized I needed to manage the depression and deal with anxiety and insecurity that the years of having to slow down created – and movement really helped to aid in my condition.”

5. Get plenty of rest

“Make sure you get plenty of rest. Moms or professional women often sacrifice sleep first, taking care of everyone else before they take care of themselves. Lack of sleep can cause heart problems, irritability, and overeating patterns,” says public speaking coach LeighAnn Heil. “Set up your environment so you naturally fall asleep at 9 to 10 pm, use a routine with a bath, and dim the lights starting at 7 pm”.

Heil adds, “Banish your phone from your bedroom. Get an alarm clock and blackout shades instead. Make sure your room is cool. I like to shut off screens at around 8 or 9 pm, and read so my body has a natural path to sleep. Proper rest can make you look and feel younger!”
