Leadership is about being different. Leaders are set apart to take organizations to higher levels. They lead people to different outcomes and places that other people could not.

In today’s changing marketplace, the world needs a new kind of leader. Today’s economy is demanding that successful companies cultivate leaders who are different from past generations.

Brian Halligan, the CEO of Hubspot stated it this way. “The way that I think about culture is that modern humans have radically changed the way that they work and the way that they live. Companies need to change the way they manage and lead to match the way that modern humans actually work and live.” Brian is speaking about a new style of leadership. This new style of leadership is what I would call “encompass leadership.”

The rise of encompass leadership

Encompass leadership is a leader’s ability to make decisions and choices in consideration of the whole person of the people that they lead. Here is a fundamental fact: People want to work with and for a leader who conveys they care about the wholeness of the person.

What does an encompass leader look like?

1. Encompass leaders see things differently

They make leadership decisions from a different set of lens. They consider different values and perspectives. Encompass leaders view leadership decisions based on the lens of wholeness – not just work performance.

2. Encompass leaders make decisions differently

They care for and take care of the “whole” individual that they lead. They are not satisfied or content with the sole facet of an employee’s work performance.

“Leadership today,” Javier Pladevall, former CEO of Volkswagen Audi Retail in Spain, told Harvard Business Review, “is about unlearning management and relearning being human. What Javier means is, the power of leadership lies in our abilities to form personal and meaningful bonds with the people whom we lead.”

Human leaders care about the personal life and health of their team. They care about what brings out the best in a person, not just what could give them the best performance (that might be temporary). They mentor people with an idea of improvement in many areas of a person’s life. Great leaders ask themselves the question, “Do my people feel like I care for all aspects of their life?”

3. Encompass leaders seek impact and profit

Encompass leaders view their business through the lens of impact, not just profit. These leaders value significance over success but drive for both. The new marketplace is demanding leaders that focus on community impact, not just business performance. The idea of the conscious capital movement is to help business owners and CEOs understand the impact that their business can have in the world. Business must become more than a spreadsheet.

4. Encompass leaders view solutions through a lens of creativity, not pragmatism

Encompass leaders think differently about solutions to problems. They use creativity to solve problems that do not even exist yet. They put their best thinking towards making the entire enterprise a success. These leaders have a vision, and that vision is to help their teams look at problems not only as something to solve, but as a way to find creative solutions to problems that don’t even exist yet.

5. Encompass leaders build a vision through a lens of worth – not transaction

Encompass leaders value things differently. They care more about creating a company that has worth and not merely financial value. They desire to build organizations that people want to rally behind and support. They do this by focusing on the value their company can bring to the marketplace. Value can come from more than products or services. Value comes from taking time to care to or to paint a picture of a nobler future.

Encompass leadership demands that leaders understand and look at business differently. They do not use the outdated models of the past. Instead, they manage and lead in a new “human” way.
