So I went from San Diego to LA to Miami to the south of France. You know, the weird thing, Derek, and I should probably let you speak some time, but I was deeply technical when I went into Andersen consulting, and I got paid much less than engineers who graduated, because I had a degree in economics. Before becoming a business owner I used to be a manager at the Boeing company and managed a team of engineers working on the 787 Dreamliner. In the middle of a Michigan winter, I stuck out my thumb and hitchhiked to Miami, the warmest place I could think of. I managed to find a job at the Miami International Airport loading racehorses onto cargo planes. If I hadn’t discovered something I truly loved to do, I might be driving a cab at the Miami airport.

But putting no time into anchoring your beliefs because you’re too busy executing sales, marketing, support, product & engineering is an easy recipe for leadership drift. You can’t just overpay every person’s salary. We could all do better – I’m sure. Conviction. You can’t make everybody an SVP.
