NYC Metro Area Accelerators, Incubators and Coworking Spaces - Suburban Edition
The concept of coworking is already well establishing in cities across the world. More than simply office space, these locations provide low-cost, communal, and convenient work facilities that foster a sense of community. By gathering early stage businesses, entrepreneurs, creatives, and other professionals, the idea is to spur collaboration and expand opportunities through a network of individuals and groups with shared ideals.
However, much of the evolution in coworking has only happened in the midst of urban centers. In NYC alone, there are over 100 various coworking, incubator, and accelerator spaces spread across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Bronx. The growth is not only in the US, but the movement has expanded globally to London, Hong Kong, Rio, and elsewhere. But what if you are not so fortunate to live in a bustling urban center?
The good news is that people in the burbs are taking it upon themselves to create their own spaces. The temptation is to simply work from a home office, which is the most convenient of all options, but can be rather lonely or a major distraction depending on the home situation. That is many ways is the appeal of coworking, it is a place where you can get work done but in a socially engaging environment. However the success of these suburban locations depends on more than the social element. Coworking only succeeds if it has convenient transportation options, a high enough population density, and nearby communities with enough independents, startups, and small business owners that find coworking a convenient option.
Given these obstacles, it would seem that coworking would have a tough time in the suburbs, but there are pockets where it is succeeding. The following list is of coworking, accelerators, and incubators in the NYC metro area* and as you can see, even in the suburbs, they are coworking it. If there is an incubator or coworking space that is missing, please do let me know and I would be glad to add it to the list.
