Even non-religious women who join the region’s metal bands can face serious challenges. In Iran, home to the metal band Frosted Leaves, it’s illegal to perform heavy metal and for women to perform at all—two strikes against the band’s vocalist, who goes by the pseudonym Elina and is obscured in band photos to evade arrest. Elina is an anomaly even among the region’s lady metalheads: she was raised in a secular household where everyone loved Metallica and Guns N’ Roses, including her mother. Despite Iran’s laws, her parents let her choose whether to join a metal band.
