SneakerLabs’ first product was a Java-based chat server and client. The hosted offering worked by having users place an “HTML-snippet” on their own website, which would retrieve the Java Applet from our servers and connect back to our servers. I tell these stories to lay the groundwork for what I am going to call Revenue Development.

The implementations were practically bullet-proof and hundreds of C++ programs relied on this library to handle their most basic functionality without having to reinvent the wheel. Rogue Wave’s fall began during Java’s rise to power in 1997-8. Their product love blinded them to the fundamental shift in the market: Java was free.

Now all you have to do is choose a programming language and build a MVP. With this in mind, choose a programming language that makes it easy to start publishing code. It’s also important that you try stick to programming language that run on UNIX. My personal favorites would be Java (Grails), Ruby (on rails) and PHP.

For the tech savvy this might include reading an intro book on programming. For the less tech savvy check for a summary and history of the programming language on Wikipedia. Don’t be too specific – you do not need to include the programming language, etc. at this stage. This is true in most, but not all cases.
