We are deluged by the media with stories of multimillionaire and billionaire entrepreneurs with their ridiculous lifestyles. For example, the farm and ranch real estate market in Montana is composed of a few large firms and hundreds of mom and pop shops, so it is very fragmented. Everyone thinks being an entrepreneur is sexy.

The first few were media businesses, which I had some experience with as a former reporter. But when I was working as a reporter in 2007, I covered the purchase of a local ski resort in Montana by business mogul Bill Foley. Suddenly, I realized that I had the basics to start a business.

Bozeman, Montana. Makes it one of the largest small towns in the Midwestern United States, and the fourth largest city in Montana. Poquoson is a small town with a big media presence. An easy winner of 2013’s top towns for mobile entrepreneurs. The state is the fourth largest in landmass, but the 48th in population density.

False experts include legions of self-appointed “gurus” and “visionaries” who saturate social media with bad advice. Or Monroe, Montana? But you’re also mistaken: There is no Monroe, Montana. Consumers don’t know a good agency from a bad one, so social media presence or a major speaking gig becomes an easy proxy.
