Venture Capital (VC) Blog Directory – 2011 Edition

Posted in Technology, Venture Capital by larrycheng on January 19, 2011

This is the 4th edition of the Venture Capital Blog Directory (1st edition, 2nd edition, 3rd edition).  This directory includes 149 venture capital, microVC/seed, and growth equity blogs.  The imperfect statistic used to rank these blogs is their average monthly uniques in Q410 from Compete (more methodology info below).  Blogs that have seen increased traffic over Q409 by 1,000+ uniques/month are highlighted in bold.  There is an additional list below of VC blogs below that had insufficient Compete data.  To subscribe to the top 15 VC blogs through Google Reader, click here: Top 15 VC Blogs.  As always, if there is any information missing or incorrect, please leave it in the comment field.  Many thanks to my colleagues at Volition Capital for their assistance with this directory – we hope it’s a useful service for everyone.

Other VC Blogs

This list includes other VC blogs that didn’t make the primary directory for one of the following reasons: (1) They don’t have any Q410 Compete data due to insufficient traffic, (2) There was insufficient data on the blog subdomain, or (3) They are a hybrid blog/corporate website meaning the actual blog traffic is hard to decipher.  They are in no particular order.

(Methodology:  We aggregated the unique visitors for each blog on Compete.com for Oct-Dec 2010, and then divided by three to get a monthly unique traffic score.   If blogs only had data for one or two of the months, it was presumed that the missing months had no traffic and the aggregate number was still divided by three.)

You should include my partner David Skok’s fantastic blog, forentrepreneurs.com, which by your methodology I think would be a top 10 blog.

David Skok’s forentrepeneurs blog is amazing so I second that recommendation. One of my best “go to” blogs for great information is that put out by OpenView Venture Partners. LOVE it http://blog.openviewpartners.com/. Keep an eye on it for future recommendations!

    Larry

Paul’s essays are great and I will gladly pass the torch to him

    But compete’s data is wrong

My traffic is up 30% year over year. Click the link that says traffic at the bottom of AVC for my stats.

Google analytics shows the same thing

    • larrycheng said, on January 19, 2011 at 10:38 pm

Fred, I recall you being one of Paul’s biggest fans. You pointed me to him in the first place awhile back.

Sorry the Compete data is off for your blog. They pretty materially underestimate the traffic to my blog as well – any ideas for better sources next time around?

Are others finding that Compete data is low?

      • fred wilson said, on January 20, 2011 at 8:18 am

the problem is all of these sites have relatively low audiences. the third party tracking services, compete, comscore, alexa, etc will all be unreliable.

you could ask each blogger for their google analytics stats. i’m happy to share mine.

  11. Greg Foster said, on January 19, 2011 at 10:21 pm

Thanks for putting this together, Larry. I am no longer with Noro-Moseley. I am an EIR with Chrysalis Ventures now and CEO of BrightWhistle, a new start-up in Atlanta.

    • larrycheng said, on January 19, 2011 at 10:40 pm

Greg, thanks for the info, I updated it.

      • Greg Foster said, on January 20, 2011 at 5:26 pm

Yeah – just echoing Fred’s thoughts. The data is way off. But… while I like Fred’s idea to share Google analytics info, my hunch is that several bloggers don’t use Google analytics. Some use StatCounter, etc. There is a lot of intellectual horsepower on this list – I gotta believe we can come up with some sort of solution. Nevertheless – thanks for doing this – very cool.

  16. Dave mcclure said, on January 20, 2011 at 12:28 pm

hi larry, thanks for including me in the list 🙂

    a few corrections:
    – my current affiliation is now 500 Startups, not Founders Fund (still a fan though 😉
    – my twitter handle is still @DaveMcClure (@500startups is our fund’s handle)

also, for future lists you may want to track our 500 Startups blog (http://blog.500startups.com) in addition to my personal one. we just launched last year, but it’s already growing strong and is authored by my partner Christine Tsai.

    • larrycheng said, on January 21, 2011 at 12:29 am

Hi Larry, Thanks for the list. You missed a great blog written by Lisa Suennen of PSILOS http://www.venturevalkyrie.com/
She just began it a few months ago but it is one of the only healthcare blogs and it is candid, funny and getting great traction. Check it out.

    • Lisa Suennen said, on January 20, 2011 at 11:02 pm

Thanks, Jennifer, for the shout-out. Larry, it would be great to be included in your list. I have had a pretty significant following myself despite being out there for only 8-9 months and I don’t think Compete tells the story. Best, Lisa

      • larrycheng said, on January 21, 2011 at 12:39 am

You should be all set – in the second list. Unfortunately, Compete doesn’t have any data yet but sounds like things are going well so next time it should register.

  18. bob dorf said, on January 20, 2011 at 2:42 pm

Thanks for the great list. Where’s Steve Blank, steveblank.com….he writes on the same subject quite often, and Compete puts him at 33,000 monthly average for q4, which would rank hiim pretty high, like fifth!

    • larrycheng said, on January 21, 2011 at 12:32 am

Bob, which venture firm does Steve work for?

      • bob dorf said, on January 21, 2011 at 2:06 pm

he’s a serial entrepreneur, founder of 8 startups, and teaches entrepreneurship at berkeley, stanford and columbia, and advises a few funds. he’s invested with a bunch of funds and does some investing himself. it feels like your list goes somewhat beyond “pure” vc’s, and steve’s writing is totally pointed toward startups, startup optimization and vc.

  19. jonathantower said, on January 20, 2011 at 5:47 pm

    Larry –

I second Fred Wilson’s comment that Compete data is woefully under-representing certain blog stats, including my own: Adventure Capitalist. The blog URL is http://jonathantower.wordpress.com. At the risk of sounding immodest, my blog traffic has surged in the past year, largely due to a lot of tech media like peHUB republishing my posts.

By your methodology, I am fairly confident it would be in the top ranks. Not sure why you are not able to scrub the right data, but feel free to drop a note to me at jtower(at)citroncapital(dot)com and we can correct if there is an issue on our end.

    Best,
    Jonathan Tower

    • larrycheng said, on January 21, 2011 at 12:36 am

Jonathan – yeah, Compete is a little all over the place. Hence my comment that it’s an “imperfect” source. But, maybe it’s consistently imperfect so directionally correct? I’ll connect with you. Maybe I need to find a way for people to submit their own data next time.

  20. […] Many of the top investors in the tech industry are also prolific bloggers, offering their insights on investment and technology trends. So if you’re looking for a list of the best – or at least the most trafficked, then you’re in luck. As Marshall Kirkpatrick noted in a story about what the best-of-the-blogging venture capitalists love, VC Larry Cheng has posted his 4th annual Venture Capitalist Blog Index. […]

    Larry,
Thanks for doing this. What a terrific project! I wanted to alert you to a new blog by Greylock Partners. It’s written by multiple members of the firm and can be found at http://www.greylockvc.com.

Also, for what it’s worth, before joining Greylock I ran the Midas List at Forbes. I can say from experience that it’s a slippery slope to ask people to submit their own numbers. Even with imperfect data from Compete, you’re likely to get far more accurate results when working with an objective third party!

I appreciate your post. I also wrote that SMS advertising provides a cost effective method of targeting promotions to specific customer profiles. You might want to remind customers of specific events or promotions, but for whatever reasons, SMS allows you to pass information directly to the right customer at very affordable prices and fast delivery.
