BEST METAL 2013 THROWBACK EDITION: Going to Mexico by Motörhead - There were plenty of outstanding “comeback” albums this year. I use that term loosely because some bands were pretty active in recent years, but the output was lackluster at best. Then they dropped an album in 2013 and it was mind blowing. Black Sabbath, Voivod, Queensrÿche, and Fates Warning were among the real highlights. Even Alice in Chains seemed to come back with a renewed sense of being. But Motörhead brought a load of bad ass with them that made Aftershock their best album since their seminal early 80’s work.
Lemmy should get the horned crown of metal king. Anyone else doing metal at the age of 67 would either quit or become a laughable caricature. There is nothing laughable or cliche about Lemmy. That comes through every song on Aftershock. Some may say there is no new ground, but what Lemmy does he does with more balls, more passion, more kick ass than anyone else. Going to Mexico just sums all that up in a three minute package. It is not simply the best track, but it is a life philosophy and the very soul of Motörhead. So this is my retro pick for best metal album of the year.
