80’S TUESDAY: Let’s Go Crazy by Prince - Minneapolis is the capital of Rock ‘N Roll. A bit extreme you think? It would not be if this was 1984 when the once relevant Village Voice named Hüsker Dü’s Zen Arcade, The Replacements’ Let It Be, and Prince’s Purple Rain as three of their top ten albums of the year in the Pazz and Jop critics poll. When you add Bob Dylan, a Duluth native, to the mix, you have some of the most influential artists of the modern rock era across hardcore, rock, R&B/pop, and folk. Rather impressive for an area more known for legendary winters, 10,000 lakes, and massive malls.
Let’s Go Crazy kicked off Purple Rain and never stops moving. The entire album is pure R&B tinged pop gold, but this song is lightning in a bottle good fusing Prince’s pop sensibilities, his lyrical wit, and guitar rock elements culminating in that wild guitar outro. Definitely one of the all time greatest moments in pop.
