Can’t Even Tell by Soul Asylum - More tundra rock! Today on the menu is the rock band that has unquestionably had the most commercially successful career of any of their Minnesota brethren. They had a bumpy road from inauspicious beginnings as a band called Loud Fast Rules, recording on Twin/Tone records, and then signing to A&M Records. It was not until almost breaking up however that they finally had a breakthrough on Columbia Records. Propelled by the success of the single “Runaway Train”, they soon went onto multi-platinum status, took home a Grammy, and were invited to play at Bill Clinton’s first inauguration party.
Grave Dancer’s Union is a solid record with plenty of excellent songs, but my favorite Soul Asylum song is off the Clerks soundtrack. Can’t Even Tell basically sums up the entire mood of the movie so well it could easily be renamed as Dante’s Theme Song. It is a great song though that neatly integrates their punk, classic rock, and country sensibilities with Pirner’s distinctive vocals into a catchy tune.
