New Jersey Is Better Than Bon Jovi
New Jersey gets a lot of flack. From the jokes about what exit you live off of to the non-garden like stretches along the NJ Turnpike to the regrettable images of Jersey Shore, it is not hard to write this state off as a total wasteland. Other than a pass-through between New York and Philadelphia and the home of the two “NY” football teams, there seems little to draw anyone to the state.
New Jersey however has many positives. I am not sure what those are, but the one thing I care about is that New Jersey has is a rich musical legacy. It was this very state where Edison invented the phonograph and the Victor Talking Machine Company was founded. This is the land of Bruce Springteen who made Asbury Park matter when the New York crowd abandoned the shore town, When Frank Sinatra sang New York, New York, he might have been picturing the majesty of the city from his hometown of Hoboken for inspiration.
Then some assclown decides to name one of their albums “New Jersey”. Jon Bon Jovi is a decent enough person in real life. He writes some passable pop-rock drivel for the masses. Yet he and his band Bon Jovi is what many people associate with New Jersey’s music scene. The same guy that called out Steve Jobs for destroying the music industry and publicly dismissed The Replacements.
New Jersey deserves better than a middling “artist” that sells lots of corporate rock albums without an once of soul. This state is more than the hair metal dreck it became tagged with. While most musicians headed to music hotbeds of New York and Philly, many influential and critically acclaimed musicians hailed from the Garden State. That is why this week’s music selections are dedicated to the awesome talent of New Jersey.
