WORSHIP SUNDAY: Betrayal by Extol - Last week I mentioned there were two Christian metal albums that really blew me away last year. Ultimately Living Sacrifice was the one I enjoyed more, but Extol was more of the real surprise. This Norwegian Christian extreme metal band had a successful run in the 90’s up until 2005, which was when they released their last album The Blueprint Dives. Their blend of progressive, death, thrash and black metal put them on the map as one of the best extreme metal bands out of Norway, and while I was not always on board with some of it, they were putting out some of the most creative Christian metal around.
There self-titled album Extol takes what they did in The Blueprint Dives to a whole other level. My favorite track is the opener Betrayal, which showcases their seamless blend of prog and death and is just a brutally heavy track. But it is song that also comes with a powerful message harkening to Matthew 25:31-46 when Jesus tells his disciples “whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.” May we always remember to care for the less fortunate among us.
