F'ING 90’S BANDS: Hey Man Nice Shot by Filter - We’re dropping more F bombs on the Strong Opinions this week than the state of Ohio! Well, at least rocks bands that start with “F” that is, and today is Filter. It would be appropriate that this modestly industrial band hails from Cleveland, Ohio. I originally never took to Filter, thinking it was a poor Nine Inch Nails rip-off (and there were plenty around 1995). Funny then that Robert Patrick was the guitarist for the Pretty Hate Machine tour and Brian Liesegang worked with Trent Reznor on the Broken EP.
Years since though my stance has softened. It was this very song that I heard on the radio that inspired this week’s theme. Hey Man Nice Shot was there first big hit off their debut album Short Bus. The song was about suicide, but not of Kurt Cobain which was the rumor at the time. It was actually about a government official in Pennsylvania who shot himself in the head during a press conference proclaiming his innocence on bribery charges. Harrowing stuff, but the tune itself it a pretty solid song with a killer riff and groove.
