They’ve released the Polymaps source code on GitHub so any developer can quickly see how the API is used, play around with real production code, and modify the base examples for their own use. When I first started program, it was 1979. When I started programming on an IBM PC in 1983, I did exactly the same thing.

No longer is it sufficient to learn a programming language, its idiosyncrasies, its libraries, and its associated development tools. Every time you build your application, you are likely to have some new bugs or incompatibilities related to a change in the language or the libraries (especially open source libraries).

Then open source the results. The government should allocate even more money to university research programs, but the results of this research should not be able to be patented and should be free for anyone to license. More recently, I’ve focused my energy on the Startup Visa movement and the Startup America Partnership.

The first program has focused on Kinect applications and has some super teams, such as Gestsure (they control operating rooms with motion control) and Ubi (they turn any surface into a touch screen.). The applications are open now through July 13. Most notably it’s much more open source focused. Want to run Linux?

In the mid-1990s, a good friend of mine, Gene Kim (founder of Tripwire and author of When IT Fails: A Business Novel ) and I were in graduate school together in the Computer Science program at the University of Arizona. I wrote an article for the IEEE Spectrum called The Future of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence is Open.

Remember, Java was theoretically Open Source, but like so many things in our world when lawyers get involved “it’s complicated.” See Is Java free/open source or not? and Is java an open source programming language? .” Oracle also got copyrights to the Java APIs.

Over the past six years, Jason Mendelson and I have heard from over 100 professors who have used our Term Sheet Series of blog posts in college (undergraduate and graduate) programs on on entrepreneurship. Jason and Brad Bernthal have been teaching a class at CU Boulder Law School called VC 360.
