METAL MONDAY: Left for Dead by Death Angel - Sometimes you forget a band. That was the case for Death Angel, thrashers that helped define the Bay Area metal sound in the late 80’s. After the success of Act III, they were one of the most promising bands in the metal scene. Then an accident left them without a drummer, who luckily survived, and then a record contract when they refused to use a replacement drummer and Geffen subsequently dropped them.
They reemerged a decade later, but metal moved forward and Death Angel just didn’t seem to fit in. Their last couple of albums just seemed off, not terrible, but not great. By that time, most of the original band members had left, leaving Rob Cavestany (guitars) and Mark Osegueda (vocals). But like many of the outstanding “comeback” albums this year, after listening to The Dream Calls for Blood, I feel like this is a comeback. The knock is that there is no new ground here, but I think that is a plus as they know exactly who they are and what music they love. The album simply rocks from beginning to end, but gets kicked off right with the blistering Left for Dead. The guitar work in particular is vicious and intense, but the rest of the band keeps up nicely.
The reason Death Angel gets the nod this Metal Monday is not just for the new album, but band was all Filipino when they started (they were all cousins) and they still mostly are to this day. As you may have heard, the Philippines got rocked by the devastating Typhoon Haiyan and is in dire need of help. There are plenty of organizations you can donate to that will direct your funds to relief efforts, but whichever organization you support, do consider helping.
