80’S TUESDAY: Thrashers by Death Angel - While hair metal got most of the attention in the 80’s, the most important and lasting contributions to metal came out of the NWOBHM era and soon after Thrash. In particular the Bay Area scene was one of most vibrant, with Exodus, Metallica, Testament, and Death Angel being the most prominent of bands (Megadeth, like Slayer, were LA-based). Much of this scene was helped along by the extensive underground tape trading network, which Death Angel benefitted from when their Kill As One demo took off.
The Ultra-Violence was their first studio album, recorded in 1987. They would become much tighter and confident over time, but this was a pretty solid first album given everyone was under 20 at the time (in fact, the drummer Andy Galeon was 14). It is a real punk/thrash album and the lead track Thrashers pretty much sums it up, just young kids tearing it up.
Also, if you missed my post yesterday, this week is all about helping the Philippines recover from Typhoon Haiyan. A good place to donate would be Doctors Without Borders or CARE or any of the organizations listed in the news article.
