BEST METAL 2013: Summoning the Faithless by Lord Dying - Unlike folks actually in the music business or who are music critics, I tend to miss a lot of stuff during the year. I simply never have time to listen to all the stuff that gets released, which is a crap ton of music. Then every so often I take a chance on a band and I am richly rewarded, and such is the case with Lord Dying, a doom metal band out of Portland, OR. If there was ever a “best” location for fostering the sounds of doom metal, the Pacific Northwest would be a good candidate.
Summon the Faithless is their debut album on Relapse Records, and it is all doomy awesomeness. You can listen to most of the tracks on Soundcloud or buy the album on Bandcamp for a full taste, but they describe themselves as High on Fire, Kylesa, and early Mastodon. Their title track is as good as any to highlight, a tune that grooves and dooms its way into being with ample doses of catchy hooks. Definitely one of the best debuts in metal this year and one of my best discoveries in a long while.
