Redemption Song by Bob Marley & The Wailers - The week before I posted one of my favorite covers of this classic song, but there is nothing like the original and nothing like Bob Marley. I have to admit that while my knowledge of reggae is weak, I always knew of Bob Marley & The Wailers from a young age.
On his last album, Uprising, Marley had already been diagnosed with cancer. Thoughts of mortality weave their way through many of the songs, especially on Redemption Song. One of his most well-known songs was also a vast departure from anything he had recorded before. It was stark, just him, his voice, and an acoustic guitar. But the power in those words and delivery cannot but help to encourage your spirit and make you rise. Yes, we will sing these songs of freedom.
Emancipate yourself from mental slavery,
None but our self can free our minds.
