WORSHIP SUNDAY: I’ll Fly Away by Jars of Clay - I was thinking of continuing along the heavier side of the music spectrum as in the past few Worship Sundays. However it was so beautiful out that I needed to hear something that made my heart soar. When I heard I’ll Fly Away by Jars of Clay this morning on the drive in, I knew this was the song for today. Though I posted the Johnny Cash version a couple of years ago, it was high time to post another take on this hymnal classic.
Jars of Clay will forever be attached to their hit song Flood from their first full length studio album in 1995. But they have continued to make excellent Christ inspired music that does not necessarily clothe itself in religious language like many Christian bands. So it was a bit of a change when they recorded a whole album of traditional hymns, but the resulting Redemption Songs album sounds fresh, giving new life to many of the old standards.
I’ll Fly Away, if not the most recorded hymn ever, certainly is up there. It is the very definition of a standard, played throughout worship services across churches around the world. Written by the prolific gospel songwriter Albert Brumley in 1932 based on a secular tune, it is a song that certainly makes the soul rise in the bright morning sun with hope.
