I quite often get a call where a founder raised $150K of initial money and has spend $120K on in-house or outsourced development and the software is 90% done. Strategic Technical Advisor.

Just the kind of person I like to meet. :) But I was a bit surprised when he emphasized how hard it had been for them to find a web developer in Los Angeles. My flippant comment was, “If you do a Google search for Los Angeles web developer, you’ll find a LOT of people and firms.” And he’s right there’s a big difference.

There's an old adage in software development that I refer to all the time: The first 90% of development takes 90% of the time. I used this when I taught software engineering. And I use it all the time now when I get the kind of message that I received: I'm looking for a web developer to continue work on my website.

I just had an all-too common conversation with the founder of a startup who had spent more than a year working with a software development company who had produced a mess. What's the User Interface Beyond the Web Site ? The mess really comes from a developer who was willing to get started on a product that was not fully thought out.
