METAL MONDAY: Eternal Summer by Celtic Frost - Here is something cheery and summery to get you through the week! Wait, early 80’s death metal does not evoke images of sunny skies, sandy beaches, and backyard barbecues? Well if your summers call to mind pyramids trembling, the sun darkening, red hued skies, monuments falling, and drowning in sand, then you have come to the right place this morning.
Celtic Frost were one of the earliest death metal bands. That they originated from Switzerland, the land of neutrality, did nothing to stop their aural assault on the masses. While never achieving great commercial success (extreme metal tends to be a rather small niche), they had a huge influence on the future of death metal and black metal, from the lyrical content to the album covers.
And speaking of album covers, the one from To Mega Therion is a classic painting by influencial Swiss artist H. R. Giger (best known for his work on the Alien movies). The album itself helped to establish the Celtic Frost sound and solidified their cred in the extreme metal scene. While any number of tunes would do, let’s just keep to the summer theme today…maybe just not the type of summer you had in mind.
