JAZZ BRUNCH: The Chess Players by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - This album for me is the definitive Jazz Messengers album. While Moanin’ and A Night in Tunisia are awesome in their own right, The Big Beat was where everything gelled and where any exploration of the Jazz Messenger’s catalogue should start.
The Chess Players kicks off the album into high gear and is one of Wayne Shorter’s best compositions. A great bluesy yet upbeat tune for a dull Saturday morning.
