Fast-forward a few years later and I followed her to Charlotte, her attending Davidson College and me at UNC-Charlotte. In our final year of school we decided to start a website development company, which we named NBN Designs (Nothing But Net), for no other reason than UNC-Charlotte had a great basketball team at the time.

Several years ago on a Saturday I found myself at Bank of America Corporate Center in Charlotte. I had gone for a three hour run early in the morning on a beautiful spring day in Charlotte and my mind was wandering all over the place. These young women were completely net native. Hack on open source projects. And inspired.

CLV is the net value of a customer to the company–how much money a customer spends during their entire relationship with you, minus the costs of products and services they buy. They wanted to clear a net profit of 20% ($30). CAC is how much you spend to acquire a customer. So we talked about the lifetime value of a customer.

And then this past weekend I was out in Snellville and realized I was about to drive past our first official office (the first “office” was our dorm room at UNC-Charlotte and our second “office” was my mother’s basement.) So I swung in and checked it out. Yeah, its kind of a dump now.
