I got involved as a judge in 1993 and was active through 1997 with occasional visits to the finals in subsequent years when I was around Boston. One of my suggestions at the 2007 Roundtable was to borrow some ideas from the MIT 100K competition, which was started in 1989 as the MIT $10k.

I didn’t listen as I didn’t want to work with anyone that was intimidated by a NAME of all of things. People ask me if innovation can flourish in places like Africa and my response is that I encounter innovation everywhere there, when people are forced to innovate to survive, often with scarce resources.

In 1997 I founded an internet company named Perficient, and it went public in 1999. The internet was created in 1983, and people said the same thing about it in 1993. I’ve been a technologist since I first played with an Apple ][+ with a lower case chip. In the mid 1990s I knew that the internet was a game-changing technology.

When I started making venture capital investments in 1997, the pace of things, and the amount of work I did, was massive. By 1987 I was regularly using faxes and Federal Express (the only overnight mail I was aware of), but a mobile phone and email didn’t really show up until around 1993 for me. The name kind of says it all.
