Before Jobs returned to the business in 1997, its sales, and popularity all steadily declined for 12 years, nearly driving it into bankruptcy. I lived in London from 1997-2005 and for 6 of those years ran my startup based out of London. It was a strange contrast for me having grown up in Northern California where failure seemed to be a badge of honor. I remember this lesson well. At this time I can tell you that the Brits definitely didn’t have a culture of failure.

Today, 1997 is the leader. Finally, 2014 is has the fourth highest GDD accumulation, trailing only 2013, 1997, and 1996. These include this year, the year with the most accumulated GDD (1997), the year with the least accumulated GDD (1998), and the 21-year average. A month ago, 2013 had the most GDD over the last 21 years.
