If I was an aspiring entrepreneur, I would take a vacation during RISE week and attend as many sessions as I could (author’s update note: sadly, RISE is no longer operational). For example, you get on the phone with a business partner and they kiss up to you. The teams are made up of founders who are dramatically younger.

I know that most people who are close to them tend to deny their existence, as we saw in the great housing bubble of 2002-2007 and the dot com bubble of 1997-2000. So at GRP Partners we’re very active now. I believe a bubble occurs when a market is willing to pay greater than intrinsic value for an asset class.

A network of friends and partners can also serve as a great assurance and reminder that you’re not walking. I tried operating on 4 hours of sleep and working through my weekends in the past, but it only took a few months for me to burn out. When my motivation lags, I think about sitting across the desk from my last boss ever in 1997.

In 1997 I was sent to England to work on a project for the oil company Halliburton. I got to help a telecom operator decide whether or not to bid on 3G spectrum and how much to pay. Not operational. Not an operator. “You should really be an operating partner. ” Not technical. Branded again.
