One of the many unanticipated consequences of the Information Age is the unprecedented spike in disinformation. If we thought that the worldwide web would bring us closer to some kind of objective truth, then we were completely wrong. Instead, every day, every hour and every minute, we are bombarded by even more content that is completely false and fabricated — but it harder and harder to recognize as such.

So, in the future, how do you understand what is real and what is fake?

Put together a 2000-word essay that answers this question to be part of the 2018 David Carr Prize at SXSW. Entry deadline for this essay is end of the day on Friday, October 13.

Established in 2016, the David Carr Prize pays tribute to this writer’s intense interest in the convergence of new media, technology, and culture. He was a frequent speaker at SXSW Interactive and SXSW Film — the diverse mix of creative types at SXSWeek very much reflected the many passions that propelled his fascinating career. As an example of his engagement with March Magic, if you attended the 2011 event, you might have seen Carr on the “I’m So Productive, I Never Get Anything Done” panel with Anthony DeRosa of Reuters, Internet personality Molly McAleer, and Ta-Nehisi Coates (who returns as a keynote in 2018).

The top essay-writer for the 2018 David Carr Prize receives a package valued at $4000 that includes a SXSW Platinum Badge, an airline voucher, and a four-night stay in an Austin hotel. All received essays are judged by SXSW staff, as well as an Advisory Board that is unique to this competition. Visit this page to read the essays from 2017.
