Rethinking Mobile First

A VC : Venture Capital and Technology

I wrote the Mobile First Web Second blog post a few years ago. In that post, I talked about apps that were designed to be used on mobile primarily with the web as a companion. It has become a bit of a orthodoxy among the consumer social startup crowd to do mobile first and web second. Vibhu Norby , co-founder of Everyme and Origami, wrote one of the most thought provoking posts of the past month arguing that mobile first is a recipe for failure for most, if not all, startups.

Mobile Is Where The Growth Is

A VC : Venture Capital and Technology

But mobile is growing like a weed. I alluded to this in a post last week where I wished for an aggregated audience measurement service across mobile and web. There is a significant shift going on this year, much more significant than we saw last year, from web to mobile. Mobile native services like Foursquare & Instagram have the most to gain from this transition. Mobile does not reward feature richness. Today that is mobile.

What If Web And Mobile Apps Are Like TV Shows?

A VC : Venture Capital and Technology

One of the things we discussed that stuck in my mind was the thought that web and mobile apps might behave more like TV shows than traditional software applications. There are web and mobile applications that seem more immune to the "here today gone tomorrow" concern. I was having lunch with a veteran of the entertainment and the video game business this past week. It was an interesting and wide ranging chat.

Offline first, mobile enabled

Chris Dixon

One of the major trends in tech startups is to create what Fred Wilson calls “ Mobile first, web second.” ” Instagram is a great example of mobile first. They barely had a website – it was all about the mobile app. The excitement over mobile-first apps is justified. But to me an even more exciting trend is what I have been calling (for lack of a better phrase) ”offline first, mobile enabled” apps.
