Digital data collection is also exceedingly complex, perhaps a reflection of the organic nature, and subsequent explosion, of the internet. For example, people are really shocked when they hear that even with no web analytics or advertising analytics tool on a site their behavior on the site gets automatically logged into server web logs.

The first company represents a normal software company that sells its products directly (either via sales staff or directly off of the internet). The example chart is not actually atypical. Of course this is Survivor Bias at it’s finest; these examples don’t prove this is a great strategy , they just illustrate that it can work: Zappos decided to sell shoes over the Internet, even though it meant eating shipping costs as customers tried shoe after shoe, constantly returning merchandise on the basis of fit or look.

I’ve always felt television, in the limit, will be delivered over IP. Specialized, proprietary cable TV distribution is gradually giving way to big, fast, cheap IP pipes. Payments flow in various ways between advertisers, production companies, traditional TV networks, premium networks (e.g. What’s taking so long?!?
