These were illuminating moments he likely would not have had if he had stayed at his desk in Alabama. There’s a business opportunity for someone who is reading this, and that is exactly what I am talking about. He also discovered that he could sell his company’s ideas on the subject to the Chilean and Argentinean metal roof industry.

Unlike most of the major MBA business plan competitions, this is apparently real money, not investment for equity, not in-kind services. They also have prizes for students, and even a $5,000 prize for the best tweet related to business plans. I’m impressed. Not bad — if you’re in Michigan.

They had three stages to their plan. The first was to franchise their model, selling a captain a $35,000 boat and a business plan to replicate Corks Away for $175,000.

We redesigned BUSA 100 with this in mind, and we are now one of the few business schools in the country where students can take an entrepreneurship course and compete in their own division of a business plan competition during their freshman year. The bigger issue is getting entrepreneurship out of the business school.
