Raising the minimum wage in Silicon Valley (beyond San Jose which has already done so) is a very important and rational thing to do for the economic health of the valley, California, and the USA economy as a whole. The issue is continuing the incredible innovation that happens in Silicon Valley.

Then I found out that Dave McClure had already invested along with many others in a Silicon Valley seed round even though the company is in Alabama. I got so excited about this company that I reached out to the CEO to enquire about fund raising. Man, Dave seems to always find out about these deals earlier than I do!

Season 4 of week 10 of Shark Tank was interesting because two of the pitches were for internet businesses that I could imagine seeing in my day job as a Silicon Valley Venture Capitalis t. I cover one of them, for Nearly Newlyweds, over at Entrepreneur.com. The other one was for a company that describes itself as Netflix for neckties.

If you had to predict where the dominant provider of mobile apps for big players like the New York Times, TED, Fox News, CBS, and Showtime (partial list) you’d guess the silicon valley, I know I would. Off to Alabama. No, Mercury, based in Nashville, quietly dominates this high tech niche.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham points to the healthcare industry as being ripe for disruption through technology. There’s no better time than now. New firms make up about eight percent of companies, versus 13 percent in the 80’s.
