My first role was in sales and the buyers on the platform absolutely loved the access to global freelancers, the low hourly rates, and the full transparency and flexibility in the system. Early on, we would routinely get emails and chats from freelancers in Russia, Ukraine, India, Bangladesh, and the Philippines expressing tremendous thanks.

By 2008, the organization was diving into the question of social enterprise – was VisionSpring about sales of glasses with a mission, or a mission organization that sold glasses? Originally named the Scojo Foundation in 2001 and re-named VisionSpring in 2008, Scojo Foundation was named for co-founders Jordan and Scott (ScoJo).

Another related trend that I am seeing in the apparel industry is where they are taking the Apple approach and marketing their products as Designed in USA although they may be made somewhere else, say India or Bangladesh or China. Customers make it necessary to put processes in place for marketing, sales, support, and back-end admin tasks. India, Bangladesh or other countries do not have quality VA's, but the Filipinos learn English in school, do not tend to be entrepreneurial (thus are less likely to steal ideas), and are culturally service-oriented.
