Today is the day that eight hopeful startups got to pitch their ideas to investors at startup accelerator Springboard’s Internet of Things (IoT) demo day in Cambridge, England. What WiCastr purports to do is allow people to access content across all of their smart devices, but without the need for an app or even an internet connection.

Anyone involved in Internet related high-tech businesses at the time learned much from the loss of easy to raise capital with high valuations and quick IPO/RTO exits. On a recent trip to Bulgaria, I pre-planned a day of service with a local NGO that provides meals for the homeless once a week.

Shouldn’t our access to technology and scale lead to lower rates than say Bulgaria? This past spring, Benchmark spent a week in China meeting with the leading Chinese Internet companies. Like Google, Amazon, ebay, and Facebook, the leading Internet companies in China are interested in disrupting payments.

Taking elements of social networking (like the ability to like individual ‘dropped’ tracks or mixes) along with integration of Facebook friends lists and giving users the option to follow bands or artists means that Songdrop might stand a better chance of achieving its goal of becoming the music player for the internet.

“Just come to Bulgaria for a few weeks” isn’t as compelling as I had hoped. For example, we’ve set up our comms so we can be away from internet for a week or more without negative effects. But our first hire didn’t, so it wasn’t. So hiring is one big reason.

When I moved to VC, I found out that there were no good consumer internet startups. Jeff – we look at mobile, consumer Internet, games and SaaS. In Bulgaria, where I’m involved in a new fund, it’s a desert. A startup that made Internet based insoles, for shoes. They were sporadic.
