Meredith Perry came up with the idea for uBeam while still in college at University of Pennsylvania and like many great inventors won her school’s business plan competition. It turns out that while she had the right idea the materials needed some reworking to come in at the cost structure required to build a business at scale.

There’s a guy in Los Angeles that I met at several tech networking events. He refined his business plan and he got commitments for $150-200k but needed some lead angels to commit first. When he re-approached me he had a much better plan and he had a prototype! A couple of quick stories / examples: 1.

To their surprise, all 165 bikes sold out in two weeks during their spring break in Los Angeles. Encouraged, the four college boys entered their business plan in an UW-Madison business competition, winning a US$7000 prize even though they were pitted against undergrads and graduates.
