Austin Based Datum Tech Secures Seed Round Funding

One More Step in Datum’s Efforts to Democratize Data

Datum Tech, Inc., an Austin based start-up specializing in mobile data, has announced a seed round funding of $950,000 from Quansight Initiate to continue its growth into the commercial and political markets. The company utilizes mobile data allowing businesses and political campaigns to create custom audiences and market to those customers/voters through their mobile phones.

By breaking down complex information created by mobile phones, Datum’s technology allows greater insight not only to consumer behavior, but political beliefs and concerns as well. Part of Datum Tech’s mission has been to “democratize data”. Datum is working to make technology more affordable and accessible to local and regional small businesses, public safety information campaigns, political campaigns, and non-profit organizations who may not have had access to the spoils of big data.

As businesses and political campaigns pivot towards a more robust digital strategy due to the onslaught of COVID 19, Datum Tech’s could be a lifeline as organizations struggle to reach customers and voters without the luxury of human contact.

“Our technology has application for established businesses, start-ups and political campaigns because we can create a tailored audience of customers or voters based on their location and preferences,” said Dr. Jennifer McEwan, CEO of Datum. “Through the use of our data, we can reach traditionally underserved communities and be an asset to a small business just starting out. We are excited to have Quansight Initiate on board as we continue to chart our path forward and make cutting-edge data and tech more accessible.”

Quansight Initiate is led by CEO Travis Oliphant. Oliphant is the founder of Anaconda and the primary author of NumPy. He also advises Datum and leads its team of data scientists and engineers.

“Datum’s technology creates value for both business and political entities by providing access to relevant data that was not previously possible,” said Oliphant. “Quansight Initiate is proud to provide funding to further Datum’s missions and goals.”

Another way Datum is “democratizing data” is by granting clients access to the lists of mobile device IDs used for audience creation to use as first party data on social media platforms. This information can be matched with customer or voter profiles to create the most accurate and current contact information ensuring organizations are using funds in the most effective and efficient way possible.

Before the seed funding from Quansight Initiate, Datum received an investment award from the Austin accelerator program Sputnik ATX. Datum joined the Sputnik ATX accelerator cohort in the summer of 2019 and that relationship still continues today.
