They are leveraging the same kinds of new technology, management thinking, and big data to improve lives that we routinely use here in Silicon Valley. Right now, all three are present in DC. That's why I'm excited about what's happening in DC.

Just a few years ago, if you wanted to do something big, you needed to go to Silicon Valley. If we try to dissect the magic of Silicon Valley, I think there are five key factors at play: Great schools. It meant frequent flights or moving your company to San Francisco to raise money from Bay Area VCs. Great senior talent.

Right sized : I tried to work with one of the best known firms in Silicon Valley. I know Mike Lincoln in Washington DC does. He’s totally tapped into the startup communities in Silicon Valley and a bit in LA. I never met a person who didn’t talk about Mike Lincoln of Cooley Godward in DC.

We don’t know of any other location in DC or elsewhere in the country where multiple government innovation groups are colocated together with startups to create their own center of gravity. As a result, Latin America has emerged as a new hotspot for tech startups, alluring some of the top investors from the Silicon Valley and China.
