Who should come on the bus?

The famous hockey player Wayne Gretsky said that a key to his success was to “skate where the puck is going.” For many years, Texas has been the fastest growing state with many of the fastest growing cities. The people who are moving here are educated and entrepreneurial. They are moving here to work at Amazon, Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Oracle. They are moving their companies here. They are coming here to start new companies. Investors who want to invest where the puck is going are investing in Texas.

This is going to be an amazing trip. You can see a list of the 70+ investors and other partners who have signed on to participate in local programming at the bottom. You should come along for the ride if you are interested in investing more in Texas technology and disruptive commerce companies and want to develop relationships with local investors who can be your deal flow.

  • Venture Capitalists and Family Offices from around the U.S. and around the world.
  • Venture Capitalists and Family Offices from around Texas who can syndicate deals or take direct investment
  • University and entrepreneurial community leaders
  • Local celebrity guests
  • Press and media

What will we do on the buses?

This won’t be a boring bus ride! You’ll learn about the Texas startup ecosystem, develop relationships with other investors, and have a lot of fun.

  • Hear pitches from startups, investors, and partners
  • Develop relationships between local and visiting investors so we can start to co-invest together
  • VC Reverse Pitch

What will do we do in each city?

In each city that we visit we will take some time to learn what is unique about each region and meet the connectors you need to know to get Texas deal flow there. We’ll always make time to develop one-on-one relationships with local investors because that’s our number one goal and of course we’ll eat lots of Texas BBQ and breakfast tacos.

Each city will showcase entrepreneurs and scaling companies with different themes:

  • June 4 in Dallas — Retail CPG, Financial Tech, Real Estate Tech
  • June 5 in Houston — Energy, Health, Robotics
  • June 6 in Austin — Artificial Intelligence, eCommerce CPG, Defense Industry, Cybersecurity (San Antonio will be joining us in Austin)

Why are we doing this?

It’s well documented that Texas receives only 2% of all of the venture capital dollars which is significantly less than you would expect for the size of the Texas economy which is the 10th largest in the world. While this statement is true of just about every city and state that doesn’t start with “Silicon” and end with “Valley,” it’s still a huge opportunity for investors who don’t have any exposure to Texas. More capital would likely result in a higher success rate for the existing startups as well as new startups that might not have formed otherwise or might have gone elsewhere.

I’m an optimist. I believe that funding levels are a trailing indicator that tell us more about what has already happened than what’s to come. Talent is the leading indicator, and no matter what way you measure it the talent is moving to Texas. Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio are four of the fastest growing cities in the country and have been for the past decade. Who’s moving here? Highly entrepreneurial, well-educated, upwardly mobile — a lot of them are moving here from Silicon Valley!

That said, more money will accelerate the growth of the region. I’ve seen numerous examples over the past 10 years of strong Texas companies that didn’t see their full potential because they were capital constrained. I believe that this one trip can make a significant impact on bringing more capital to Texas in a way that creates great economic opportunity for the local businesses as well as the investors who are coming into the market.

Thanks for the inspiration

I’ve been part of other trips over the past decade that have inspired this trip and shared their playbooks. Big thanks!
