SVOD is a form of VOD, which stands for, you guessed it, ‘video on demand’. VOD covers both cable supported players and OTT services.

What is VOD?

Video on demand is a media distribution technology which enables consumers to watch videos without having to access them via a standard video playback system. VOD also completely removes all the limitations of a traditional static programming schedule, making it more convenient for the consumer.

VOD includes video on demand services that allow video streaming access through cable network and also through the internet without the need for a paid traditional satellite or cable TV service. VOD services that operate through the internet include SVOD (subscription), AVOD (ad-supported), and TVOD (transaction).

What is SVOD?

SVOD stands for ‘. It is an on-demand service in which you sign up via a subscription which gives you access to the service until the subscription ends. However, most subscriptions are continuously paid and therefore usually only end once you unsubscribe. This allows you to view any of the videos and content on the service, whenever you want, wherever, and on almost any device.

It simply allows subscribers access to consume as much content as they desire at a flat rate each month.

Examples of an SVOD service

Any video streaming service you are subscribed to is an SVOD service, including the likes of Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+. They all require a monthly or annual subscription to view their full content library, allowing you to consume as much content you want on a range of devices, at any one time.

What are the benefits?

Flexibility and Cost.

Because consumers are not locked into a long-term contract with SVOD, they have significantly more freedom to opt out by simply cancelling the subscription at any time. Users benefit from more flexibility, while SVOD providers are constantly encouraged to keep customers by offering new and original content and competitive pricing.

Personalization.

Subscription VOD services are a lot more personalised to the consumer’s interests than with other video services, as they collect data from what you have watched on the platform to then suggest similar videos.

Watch whenever and wherever.

SVOD services are accessible to anyone, regardless of device type, and they allow anyone to stream content from the comfort of their own home.  Some services allow you to watch on up to four or more devices at one time. So you could be watching Netflix on your smart TV, while your mother is streaming it on her phone, our dad on his computer, and your partner on their Xbox console. Practicality is key here.

Watch More for Less.

SVOD services have made binge-viewing possible and practical, as they allow consumers to binge-watch complete series and movies at a considerably lower cost. You can watch a full series or even full box set of multiple series, without adverts, having to wait for a new episode, and with zero hassle at all. A month’s subscription with access to thousands of movies can cost you less than a cinema ticket.
