The strength of the Central Texas technology / startup scene helps SXSW thrive as an epicenter of innovation. Some of the most interesting events in Austin for the week of May 1 through May 7 are as follows:

Monday, May 1: Food & Tech ATX Meet Up (FREE)
If working on current or future challenges associated with food, you are invited to come network with innovators and ahead-of-the-curve thinkers in this community. At Capital Factory at 6:30 pm.

Tuesday, May 2: Bank SNB Entrepreneur’s Hour (FREE)
This “First Tuesday” series of networking events spotlights local entrepreneurs and their game-changing products and services. Event features live music, complimentary beer, wine and light hors d’oeuvres, and will also have short spotlight of several Austin/Domain-based businesses. At Bank SNB (3001 Palm Way, Ste. 108) at 5:30 pm.

Tuesday, May 2: The Austin Forum (FREE)
This edition of the monthly lecture / networking series is titled “The Growing Threats of Cybersecurity: What You Should Know” and featured Alan Daines, Chief Information Security Office for Dell. At Galvanize at 5:45 pm.

Tuesday, May 2: Intro to the Austin Startup Scene Happy Hour
This event is a great chance to network and have a good time whether you are looking to break into the scene or are already deeply immersed in it. It’s also an opportunity to meet some of the Austin startup scene organizers. At Capital Factory at 6:00 pm. $7 entry fee.

Wed, May 3 thru Fri, May 5: Small Business Festival
Hear from CEOs, founders and business experts through keynote presentations, panel discussions, and interactive workshops on topics crucial to help small businesses grow big. On Thursday, May 4 at 10:00 pm, Special pitch Midnight Pitch Live ATX. At 800 Congress Ave. Tickets $99-$297.

Wednesday, May 3: Texas Healthcare Venture Forum
Hosted by TEN Capital Group, TxHVF17 is a one-on-one funding forum open to qualified Texas companies and local and national investors. At Norris Conference Center. Must apply for entry to event.

Wednesday, May 3: Web Development Immersive Info Session (FREE)
Are you interested in becoming a web developer? Are you ready to propel your career in web development? Perhaps you know coding basics but are looking to expand your skills further. Come learn about our Web Development Immersive Program to discover what tools and resources are available for you. At Galvanize at 6:00 pm.

Thursday, May 4: ATX Aging & Innovation Summit
The ATX Aging & Innovation Summit will include entrepreneurs, academics, practitioners and investors who will discuss the newest trends and spotlight some of the most significant innovations in the aging/tech space. At Dell Medical School at 9:00 am. $95 entry fee.

Thursday, May 4: Colaborator Exclusive Talk with FloSports (FREE)
Do you want to work in sports media? Join us for an interactive panel featuring Executives from FloSports. Come hear how they’ve been able to create this impressive infrastructure & do what they’ve done — all here in the state of Texas. At Google Fiber Space at 6:15 pm.

Thursday, May 4: Longhorn Startup Demo Day (FREE)
Come watch this year’s biggest entrepreneurial showcase of top undergraduate startup ventures from the Spring 2017 Longhorn Startup Lab!. Each startup will get 5 minutes to pitch their venture to the Austin entrepreneurship community and UT Austin faculty and students. At Lady Bird Johnson Auditorium at 5:00 pm

Thursday, May 4: Texas Venture Labs Venture Expo (FREE)
See the best startups Austin has to offer in a fast-paced, high-energy setting. Find out which startups are raising money, which are seeking advisors and board members, and which are simply hitting it out of the park. Meet investors, entrepreneurs, and the companies that are making Austin great. At AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center at 1:00 pm.

Friday, May 5: MobilityX Hackathon (FREE)
Join MobilityX in conjunction with car2go to solve real time problems by re-envisioning car accessibility in Austin. In this weekend long hackathon we’re looking for innovative solutions to help us improve the availability of car service throughout the city. At Capital Factory. Begins Friday, May 5 at 6:00 pm and ends Sunday, May 7 at 3:00 pm.

Friday, May 5: Capital Factory’s First Floor Opening Party! (FREE)
The startups are slowly taking over the Omni! Join us as we celebrate the grand opening of the ground floor… you can’t miss it! At Capital Factory at 6:00 pm.

On the horizon: O’Reilly Open Source Convention / OSCON (May 8–11), Austin IT Symposium (May 9), Knowbility Accessibility Leadership Symposium (May 15–16), Doree Shafrir at Book People (May 17), Austin A-List Ceremony (May 25), SXSW 2018 (March 9–18, 2018).
