Mike Pronovost, a business student at Fresno State was at the White House last week with 100 young entrepreneurs. Pronovost developed Powerband, a program that uses files stored in a virtual desktop to speed up Internet access. He developed the program working odd hours in a room in his parents’ house. Lean startup like story.

I was a judge at last night’s 59 days of code startup competition here in Fresno. Join nearly 6,000 startup entrepreneurs by subscribing to my RSS feed. Teams had 59 days to create a killer app. One that solves a problem, is marketable, and demos well. Overall it was an impressive showing of local talent.

Seven years later, they've trained about 5,000 students and created over 1,000 new technology jobs in Fresno. A company headquartered in Fresno, California.

Indeed, I did buy my latest startup, but the deal was done from a spare bedroom of my suburban home in Fresno, California for less than most people pay for a new car. But when the firm had focused its attention on other things the site was neglected, and the technical headaches ballooned as the original developers left the company.
