Disintermediation is one of the oldest stories of the internet. We’ve seen Betfair cut the middleman out of sports bets for a reasonable chunk of the football and horseracing gambling market in the UK but I can’t think of another large business that has disintermediated a consumer market.

Publishers will get their ad revenue. Ad platforms will keep selling inventory. But eliminating third-party cookies won’t improve ad targeting.

As more hardware companies start paying attention to revenue attach, following the lead of companies like Dropbox, Ring, and Peloton, there’s an obvious place for Sonos to do this. I hope they are thinking hard about it, rather than fearing being disintermediated by Alexa.
