SneakerLabs’ first product was a Java-based chat server and client. The hosted offering worked by having users place an “HTML-snippet” on their own website, which would retrieve the Java Applet from our servers and connect back to our servers. I would argue that startups need to be doing Revenue Development very early on.

We need whomever is responsible for product development and/or ops to, effectively, carry a pager for drop-everything-and-do-it-now resolution of security issues, just like we’d do for e.g. the server has fallen over or “our building is, physically, on fire.” This was clearly written for developers using Rails.

Even a beginner and mediocre developer can instill life into your mock-ups and bring the MVP live. Sooner or later, using PHP or RoR or.Net or some Java framework, that 0.5x developer is all you need, as long as you can make him stick around long enough. Is Yelp a good place to find good technical co-founders? Is Google Inc.

For most of its existence, PHP didnt have a standard package-distribution system or very good module support. Although this was annoying for sysadmins, security consultants, and language purists (and for those who had proprietary modules that couldnt be bundled), it was a huge boon for developers.
