What's Wrong With Sensationalist Media

A VC : Venture Capital and Technology

Check out this email I got from a major media company this past week: I was just talking to my boss about New York's tech scene and the types of stories I should go after. He  He wants me to get a little personal like digging into how founders and investors are actually using all this money flowing into the city. But beyond the typical, there must be some stories that have gone unreported or overlooked.

The internet is reshaping our economy from one of huge corporations with lots of jobs to huge platforms with lots of income streams

Chris Dixon

From Innovation and the Bell Labs Miracle in today NYTimes: Innovation is an important new product or process, deployed on a large scale and having a significant impact on society and the economy, that can do a job “better, or cheaper, or both.” Regrettably, we now use the term to describe almost anything. It can describe a smartphone app or a social media tool; or it can describe the transistor or the blueprint for a cellphone system. The differences are immense.

Follow the Money

Over the past few weeks I've advised a half dozen entrepreneurs at various stages of startupdom. I have a lot less time to chat or review things because I'm working full time, serving on the school board, and developing my own stuff nights and weekends. So I cut to the chase. What are you selling, who's buying it, what are they paying for it, and how often?", and change the verb tense depending on their stage. It really focuses the conversation on what the business is. Ideas are great.

Posses, Posers, and Pushers – An Entrepreneur’s First Tradeshow

Launching Tech Ventures

by Julia Kastner The hardest thing about being the little guy (or girl) at a big, bad trade show is that you have no idea who is who. I went to the MAGIC trade show in Las Vegas – one of the biggest events for fashion and retail in the world. The way I’ve been describing it is that it’s a department store for department stores – a place where buyers for Macy’s, Nordstrom’s, Saks, and thousands of boutiques come to see what brands are offering for the season a year from now - Spring/Summer 2013.

WORSHIP SUNDAY: Forsaken by As I Lay Dying - Taking a bit of a turn this week highlighting one of my favorite Christian metalcore bands. An Ocean Between Us is still one of the most solid albums ever recording in the entire genre, and that includes the AILD follow-up The Powerless Rise. While any track would be worthy of posting, the words and the intensity of the song Forsaken really stuck out this week. It is easy to lose sight of our Lord when we are consumed with our own narrow desires.
