Welcoming the Newest Partner to Upfront Ventures

Both Sides of the Table

Today is amongst the proudest days I’ve had at Upfront Ventures — getting the chance to announce that Kevin Zhang has been promoted to Partner. Watching him develop over the past 4.5 years at Upfront has been both a pleasure and also has taught me a lot about venture capital. Kevin joined Upfront in 2012 as an Associate. We generally look for associates who are deeply quantitative, have great research & analytical skills and often have the tool kit for framing and making complex decisions.

6 Steps To Success In Your Entrepreneurial Goals

Startup Professionals Musings

Too many aspiring entrepreneurs I mentor can talk at length about their innovative ideas and passions, and ask lots of good questions, but never make much progress in building a real business. In my experience, building a business is much more about getting things done than having great ideas. The challenge is to move from ideas to specific goals, to delivered solutions.

Quick Thoughts on Term Sheets and LOIs

Rob Go

This is something that isn’t that obvious to founders, so I thought I’d write a quick post. When a VC invests in a startup, the two parties usually sign a term sheet that lays out the major terms of the investment round. This is usually followed by several weeks or longer of legal due diligence. 90%+ of term sheets result in a closed deal that is more or less equivalent to what was discussed.

Laws of 10x found everywhere. For good reason?

A Smart Bear: Startups and Marketing for Geeks

We love stories more than science. A good story causes us to see patterns in noise. Maybe that’s the case with the idea that all manner startup phenomena conform to a sort of “10x Rule.” But I think it’s actually true, or true enough that it’s an excellent rule of thumb that should be assumed until proven false. Here’s a slew of examples to guide you: Business models change based on pricing in roughly 10x increments.

Why it pays to be a parallel entrepreneur

The Next Web

Instead, they can boldly go into multiple ventures simultaneously. It’s this style of entrepreneurship I’m a proponent of.

During Boulder Startup Week 2016, Dave Mayer of Technical Integrity moderated a panel on Mental Health and Wellbeing that I was on with Sarah Jane Coffey and Tom Higley. The Twitter President. Farhad Manjoo writes that while Twitter has the right to ban Trump, they shouldn’t , or at least not based on his content to date. Currently I agree with Farhad – Trump uses the platform irresponsibly and without full care of the implications of what he says, but he doesn’t cross the “ban” line. Let Me Point out to you How Ridiculous the Trump Tech Meeting Was

It’s a breath of fresh air to see that Marc Benioff, who has become a beacon for protecting the rights of our most vulnerable citizens, is not in attendance. But I actually fall on the side of the issue that it’s good that our tech leaders are meeting with Trump for 2 reason: Whether I like it or not (I most certainly do not like it), Donald Trump will be
