You find early stage employees expecting to work normal hours, to get paid a regular salary, and not asking or expecting equity. Finland itself has significant engineering talent, and is also attracting entrepreneurs from Russia and the former USSR. There isn’t much of a killer instinct among the masses.

For years Mexico lagged behind a lot of other Latin America countries when it came to private equity. As well as this, their private equity investments have surpassed the likes of Russia and Turkey – meaning that the nation is slowly but surely becoming a real force. Now, things have been transformed.

Public investors, cross-over investors, and even traditional private equity firms have taken notice, further blurring the lines of what constitutes true venture capital. A concept discussed during that time was “ glasnost ,” a part of the new Russia’s restructuring to provide more openness and transparency in information.

Countries such as the UK , Russia and Finland are trying to replicate its ecosystem, to stimulate their local industries. Unsurprisingly, this seems to weed out the less passionate people, while encouraging others to put in sweat equity in their own ideas. The old continent often looks up to the Valley as a sort of Eldorado of IT.
