The Internet might be truly global then, but the world of startups still revolves much around Silicon Valley. To my surprise, the ideas and technology behind that startups were not superior to the ones we have in Finland. The old continent often looks up to the Valley as a sort of Eldorado of IT. Silicon Valley is a hub.

Even some of the most prominent startup household names in Silicon Valley saw their demise last year — and everyone entrepreneur and startup face this fear. In recent months, Silicon Valley has featured quite a bit in the news, as some high-profile household tech companies have been laying off droves of employees.

Instead, the technology has been limited to niche operators and start-ups, such as Finland’s Varjo, which makes high-end headphones, and Estonia’s Ready Player Me, a cross-game avatar platform. Even though Finland offers free and high-quality education, it cannot compete with Silicon Valley regarding salaries.

Foreign visitors to Silicon Valley continually mention how willing we are to help, network and connect strangers. Today, in spite of the fact that the valley is crawling with IP lawyers, the tradition of helping and sharing continues. We take it so for granted we never even to bother to talk about it. We'll see if they do.

Foreign visitors to Silicon Valley continually mention how willing we are to help, network and connect strangers. Last week in Helsinki Finland at a dinner with a roomful of large company CEO’s, one of them asked, ”What can we do to help build an ecosystem that will foster entrepreneurship?” It’s the “Pay-It-Forward” culture.
